Welcome to Disability Peer Advocates
I am a knowledge seeker. Seeking information from those with meaningful life experiences: stories that need to be told and heard for all to grow.
Through out my varying life experiences, if I have not understood something, I find (most often) I am seeking out answers. In 2017 I participated in a Research Training Cohort, where I learned of PAR – Participatory Action Research.
Definition – PAR seeks to understand and improve the world by changing it. At its heart is collective, self reflective inquiry that researchers and participants undertake, so they can understand and improve upon the practices in which they participate and the situations in which they found themselves.
During this time, working within the Cohort and being exposed to the concept of PAR, I was struck by the value of what I have learned both personally and professionally. I was provided a platform for my story to be told and heard, with the focus of changing systems and improving services. During this one year experience, I found my voice.
In May of 2017, I was invited to attend an On The Table meeting; where the focus is to promote change in our communities, by being proactive and Taking Action towards creating positive change. I heard this message loud and clear… take action I did!
Disabilitypeeradvocates.com was a result of my taking action (by the end of that fateful day in May). Who else better to report what works, and what doesn’t, than those who have had disability and employment related experiences.
My hope: together we learn and grow through peer advocacy.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
